Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a federal holiday and a bank holiday?
A US federal holiday is established by federal law — federal offices close and most banks follow. A UK bank holiday is a day banks are permitted to close under the Banking and Financial Dealings Act; in practice most businesses treat them as public holidays.
What does "observed" mean next to a holiday?
When a fixed-date US federal holiday falls on a Saturday, it is observed on the Friday before; on a Sunday, on the Monday after. That is the day federal offices actually close. In the UK, a similar substitute weekday is used when Christmas, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day falls on a weekend.
Are state holidays included?
Not yet. These pages cover US federal holidays, England & Wales bank holidays, and India’s major gazetted holidays. State-specific holidays vary too much to list reliably without official sources for each state.
Why aren’t Diwali or Eid listed for India?
Diwali, Eid, Holi and similar festivals follow lunisolar calendars, so their Gregorian dates shift every year and are announced by official notification. This phase covers only India’s fixed-date gazetted holidays; festival dates are planned for a later update.
